Joan McKeen

Death Notice

McKEEN, Joan - Peacefully at Victoria Hospital on Saturday, November 18, 2017, Joan Eleanor McKeen, nee Fall of London in her 92nd year. Beloved wife of the late Wilbert (1999). Loving mother of Eleanor Brown of Listowel, Robert and his wife Brenda of Toronto, John and his wife Sheri of Bridgenorth, Kenneth and his wife Maureen of Lakefield, Marilyn in France, William and his wife Michelle of London. Fondly remembered by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Among her numerous achievements, Joan excelled in academia, motherhood, and charity. She was not only the first female graduate student in plant pathology at the University of Toronto, but she was also a PhD candidate who passed her dissertation in the early 1950’s and only stepped back from her studies in order to get married and raise six children. Joan’s passion for nature and animals continued throughout her life: her kindness and generosity extended not only to family and friends, members of the church, and strangers she encountered, but also to the birds and squirrels in her backyard. Although in her final years she recognized everyone by their shoes, she never failed to touch the heart. With her ear-to-ear grin, sharp wit, and unparalleled sweet tooth, Joan was, to the very end, relentless in her intellectuality, friendship, and faith.
