Michael Fleet

Death Notice

Dr. Fleet, Michael (Mike/Mick) Ph.D. FRSC - Jan. 04, 1938-Dec. 06, 2017. With immense sadness the Fleet family announce the sudden but not unexpected death of a dear husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Best friend and dearly loved husband of Joan. Cherished father of Paul (Lisa), Michele (Doug), and John (Mandeep). Dear grandfather of Devin, Colin, Brendan, Meghan, Ali, Aida, Sofia, and great grandfather of Emma. Mike will be dearly missed by his family in England: brother Brian, sister Jenny, and brothers-in-law Roger and David, as well as cousins, nephews, and nieces. Pre-deceased by sisters Erica and Suzanne and sisters-in-law Pauline and Ann. After a very happy childhood of benign and loving neglect and child labour, which fed his fierce independence, strong work ethic, and immense curiosity in the world around him, Mike attended Manchester University, graduating with a Ph.D. in Geology in 1963. In 1964 he emigrated from England with Joan and Paul to work at Western in the Earth Sciences (formerly Geology) Department, teaching mineralogy, crystallography and geochemistry. Over 38 years at Western as a professor and 14 as an emeritus, he published two books and hundreds of articles on a wide variety of the earth’s minerals. He had a wonderful and rich academic life, working with many talented students and other academics in Canada and across the globe; he liked nothing better than fierce academic debate. He was honoured to be a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and an Honorary Professor at Jilin University in Changchun, China. Mike had three great passions in his life: his research, his family and Manchester United. The family would like to thank the many health professionals who cared so wonderfully for Mike this year, especially at Parkwood Institute and in his own home. At Mike’s request, there will be no funeral, just a family farewell. Arrangements are by the Harris Funeral Home.
