Peter Butler
Death Notice
BUTLER, Peter - After a brief illness, Peter Richard Butler of London passed away at his home on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, at age 81. Beloved friend and husband for 59 years of Mercia. Loving father of Sarah (David), and Lee (Angie). Dear grandfather of Leah. Also remembered by family in England.
Peter was an eternal optimist with many creative interests in life. He was always busy and there was never enough time to pursue all his passions. He was a talented wooden boat builder and fine furniture maker.
Peter emigrated to Canada from England after finishing a 7 year apprenticeship for graphic design and became renowned for his skills in graphic arts as part owner of Design Associates.
He was also an avid sailor for 50 years, and enjoyed racing on Lake Huron, but his happiest times were sailing with family and friends in the North Channel.
A gathering for family and friends will be held at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James St. at Richmond, on Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 3 to 5 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Salthaven Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center would be appreciated.

I did some computer support work for Peter decades ago at his office on Wonderland North. He was a kind, engaging man and I’ve wondered about him over the years. Saddened to learn of his passing. My condolences to his son, Lee, who I met many years ago through a mutual friend, and to Mr. Butler’s entire family.

For so many years, Peter set the visual tone and standards for Canada Trust during a time of intense and rewarding growth. I spent many hours by his side as we created visual communication that was always customer focused and learned so much from him about dramatic but clean, balanced design. In the years since we had many chats about life, design and family. I will miss him. My condolences to Mercia, Sarah and Lee and their families.

Mercia, I am greatly saddened by the passing of Peter. He was an unique individual, who I thoroughly enjoyed working and being with for countless hours, over many years. He was enormously talented, one of the top Canadian commercial designers, in my experienced opinion. He was so passionate about his work, and I loved that! We debated, yes often argued, about how things should be communicated but in the end, he produced outstanding results for both of us. He was a true partner in contributing, at the highest level, to Canada Trusts success.
While I have not talked to Peter recently, I often thought about our special relationship as I passed your home on Riverside. He was one of the really good guys, a true friend, and I will miss him. Sad to say, I am now in Florida, and will not be at the celebration of his life. However, I will pause and reflect on Peter at 3 pm Saturday.
My thoughts are with you, Mercia, and the family.

Peter and I shared the same interests in designing and building boats. No one can compare to the knowledge he possessed on such subjects. I enjoyed our chats on our dock. Bon Voyage Peter.
