SUMMERS, Rev. Herbert S. - It is with broken hearts that the family announces the death of Rev. Herbert S. Summers on October 18, 2019 at age 78. He is predeceased by his wife, Karen (1990). Loving father of Sandra (David Sleegers), Scott and Adam (Heather Cowx). Adored grandpa to Matthew (Jolene), Karen and Monica (Aron) Sleegers, Noah, Sophie, Emma, Mark, Nathan and Cole (Summers). Also survived by his brother Richard Summers of Windsor. Our family holidays and vacations will never be the same. Herb served at four congregations during his years as a minister from 1966 to 2019: Glenview and Louth United Churches in St. Catharines (1966-71), Highgate, Morpeth and Turin United Churches in Kent County (1971-83), Richards Memorial United Church in London (1983-2005) and most recently at Metropolitan United Church (2005-). He touched the lives of many people through his ministry and will be greatly missed. He had a passion for his family, his church, cruising and shopping (not necessarily in that order). Herb also loved flowers and we know he would appreciate being surrounded by them at this time. Visitation will be at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James Street at Richmond, London on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. and on Friday from 1-4 & 7-9 p.m. His funeral will be conducted at Metropolitan United Church, 468 Wellington Street at Dufferin, London on Saturday, October 26th at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Jeff Crittenden officiating. Private family interment immediately following the service at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Donations in memory of Herbert would be appreciated to The Heart and Stroke Foundation, Parkwood Palliative Care (sjhcfoundation.org) or Canadian Blood Services (give.blood.ca).

Herb was a regular visitor during my 4 month hospital stay. When he entered the room, things got brighter. When he smiled, he lifted my spirits. When we spoke, he renewed my hope. When we prayed, he strengthened my faith. He was so much to so many. He will be greatly missed. And we will have no one to buy great socks for when we travel.

We were saddened to learn of his passing. He left knowing he had a loving family and loving his work with the United Church of Canada. I enjoyed working with Herb as organist at Richards and especially enjoyed it when he would join with me playing the piano for the final hymn of the service…WITH GUSTO!!!., and in the recent years services at Chelsey Park and Cherryhill. RIP Herb, you will not be forgotten. Love Jan and Harvey Fife.

Dear Sandra, Scott and Adam
My sincere sympathy in the loss of your Father.
I know you must have wonderful memories to comfort you.
I too have treasured memories of racing between Morpeth and Highgate for Church and sometimes having the opportunity to play an organ and piano duet with your Dad.

My sincere condolences to the entire Summers family. I have fond memories of Rev. Summers. He was a wonderful man. From the first time we met him, when we asked him to marry my husband and I, he made us feel so comfortable and welcomed. He also baptized all three of our children and I can remember him carrying our daughter around the church. He really was a very wonderful man who touched many lives including ours and he will be missed .

To the Family of Herb Summers -
I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of his death. He was a very special person! For a long time, we worked together in local United Churches, and also travelled about in London Conference. Initially, we bonded through music.
My caring thoughts are with you.

Herb and I were both ordained in 1966, and that is when I met Herb. We have both been in London Conference since 1971. Herb was my daughters family minister at Richards, and Herb and I shared in the baptism for their 2 children. Through the years I have so much valued his ministry. He has been a wonderful role model of a caring, compassionate minister. It has been my privilege to have known Herb for many years. My sincere sympathy to family members.

Sandra, David & family. I am so sorry for the loss of your father. He was such a wonderful man as you know. I enjoyed the cruises I went on with him. He was there for me when my husband passed away. I am sorry I cannot be there in person but I had cataract surgery yesterday. I remember you & your family when you used to come to R.M.U.C. It was so sad when he left our church and now so sad that he has passed on. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you try to get through this.

To Sandra, Adam and Scott. We knew your parents when we attended Richards Memorial Church. Your Dad always greeted us with a friendly smile and handshake. Adam and Scott went to Clarke Road with our daughters Cindy, Carla and Jocelyn . You are in our thoughts. Sorry could not get to services.
