Diana McAuslan

Death Notice

MCAUSLAN, Diana Gail Shaufler - died peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, 26 November 2019, in her 80th year. Loving and devoted wife for 55 years of Gordon William Faber McAuslan (deceased). Cherished mother of Bonnie-Heather McAuslan and Lee Merrick, Peggy Ann and Walter Medeiros, Sharon Linn and Tom Brier, Janet June McAuslan, and Diana Kathleen and Douglas Gillard. Proud grandmother of Darien Merrick and Andrew Crichton, Tyler James (deceased) and Jaime Lynn Medeiros, Tommy Brier and Juliana Flegel, Jaden Brier, Christin, Colin and Krystal, and Cameron Gillard. Loving sister of Margaret (John) Dodman (Howard) Steinberg, Edythe (Harry) Reid, Etna (Robert) Shaw, and Sharon (James) Johnston. Predeceased by her mother Annie Madeline Challis, and father Henry Albert Shaufler.

Diana was born in Tilbury, Ontario, and enjoyed playing the violin with her sister, Sharon. She was Concert Mistress of the Essex County Concert Orchestra. She was crowned Queen of the Crystal Ball during her senior year of high school. An elementary school teacher, including at S. S. No. 7, in a one-room school in Eberts, Diana shared many joy-filled stories of her teaching experiences. During her tenure at Wheatley Area Public School, with Gord as accompanist and composer, Diana built a strong choral music program, and together they were instrumental in organizing a community marching band. Diana was diagnosed with chronic progressive multiple sclerosis in 1984. A testament to her spirit of grit and determination, she fiercely guarded her independence and persistently refused to allow the disease's aggressive limitations to prevent her from offering thoughtful acts of kindness and notes of encouragement to family, friends, and anyone who needed an uplifting message of faith.

Mom's favourite poem:
"The woods are lovely, dark and deep
But I have promises to keep
And miles to go before I sleep
And miles to go before I sleep."
- Robert Frost.

Mom's oft-quoted assurance that all was right with the world:
"Every experience, every person God sends into your life is the perfect preparation for the future that only He can see."
Paraphrased, Corrie Ten Boom.

Together, these quotes are telling of the beauty and resilience of Diana's soul.
