Charles Levine

Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Charles Levine, our beloved father and grandfather, who left us peacefully in his seventy-eighth year on September 2, 2024 following a brief battle with cancer. Known to all of his family and friends as Chuck, he was predeceased by his parents, Morris and Lillian Levine, and sister Jesse. He is survived by brother Mitch, daughters Amy (Andrew) and Sarah (Tyler) and granddaughter Alexandra.

Not only a gifted scholar, Chuck was also a man of immense kindness and love. He dedicated forty-five years to teaching and mentoring in Sociology at Western University, and served for a number of years as department chair. He was adored by his students, and won many awards for teaching excellence. Chuck’s passion for intellectual pursuits, music, and spirited debate was admired by all who knew him. He had a brilliant mind and an insatiable curiosity, which he shared generously with his students, colleagues, and loved ones.

Chuck was a constant and supportive presence in the lives of his daughters. He took great pride in their achievements and was always ready to help in any way he could, whether that meant engaging in deep intellectual discussions, offering sound advice, or looking after Sarah’s rescue dog while she was at work. These quiet acts of love were a testament to his deep commitment to family. This devotion extended to his granddaughter, with whom he shared a special bond.

His love of music was a lifelong passion that brought Chuck intense joy. Whether playing the guitar, listening to his favourite recordings on his perfectly balanced stereo system, or discussing the nuances of a composition with friends, music was an essential part of his identity. It provided him with both solace and inspiration, much like the academic pursuits to which he devoted his life.

A public celebration of Chuck’s life will be held at a date to be determined. In place of flowers, we ask that donations be made to Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario.

We are profoundly grateful for the outpouring of love and support we have received, and especially grateful to the wonderful staff at Victoria Hospital, especially Drs. Hana Geres and Richard Malthaner, as well as nurses Ali, Erin, Julia, Linda, and Rebecca.

Chuck’s legacy will live on in our hearts, in the music he loved, the debates he sparked, and the lives he touched.
