David Roy Barton
Korean War Veteran
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of David Roy Barton at the Victoria Hospital in London Ontario, on Thursday June the 3rd, 2021 at 9:00pm surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Cascades Quebec on Sept 9th, 1932, Roy worked on the family farm and on April 2nd, 1951, he signed up to join the Army at the time of the Korea War. During his 27 years he served in Korea, Kemptville, Germany, Gagetown (2), Bordon, Petawawa (3), Ottawa, Sardinia Italy, Cyprus, and Egypt. He retired as a Sgt in 1978.
Upon retirement, he joined the Corps of Commissioners as Chief Warrant Officer where he served on Parliament Hill No 1 Section and the Prime Minister Privy Council. He was fortunate to have worked for Canada’s Prime Ministers from 1978 to 1998 including, Pierre Trudeau, Joe Clark, John Turner, Brian Mulroney, Kim Campbell, and Jean Chretien. He did meet with their families including the now Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Roy was one of the very few remaining Korean Vets and was an active participant every year with the Poppy drive collecting for our fallen soldiers. Along with his father they joined the Legion in 1950 and was an active member for 71 years.
He was proud of his military life and service to his country and was who he was, a soldier from a very young age. What he was really known for was his charming magnetic personality and how he brought joy to all his friends and acquaintances wherever he travelled. He was also known for his indoor over decorating for all the holidays.
Roy was married to Muriel Francis (White) Barton in Kemptville N.S on April 14th, 1955, who passed away peacefully at home on Nov 15th, 2008. And is survived by their 7 children, Mary, David, Heather, Johnny, Brenda, Debora, and Rosemarie. With 30 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Along with his 3 remaining sisters, Norma, Shirly and Joan. Besides his parents Norma and Anne, he was predeceased by his brothers William and Raymond and sister Audrey.
Due to covid there will be small groups for the viewings by appointment on Thursday June 10th followed by a Service for family on Friday June 11th. Taking place at Harris Funeral Home, London (519-433-7253).
The family would like to ask that donations in Roy’s name be made to LHSF Cancer Program by going to LHSF.ca and follow the guidelines of Memorial donations under Cancer Program with David Roy Barton as the honouree. Under whom should be notified would be John Barton, email jo********@****rs.com. Any donation would be greatly appreciated. The family would also like to say thank you to all the doctors and support staff who attended to all his needs during these trying times. They were exceptional and made him as comfortable as can be.
