Obituary

McMILLAN, Dr. Donald Burley – April 25, 1929 – December 18, 2018 With great sadness we announce Donald’s passing at home on December 18, 2018. Always the gentleman, he lived life with grace, charm, dignity, unbounded curiosity and a joyful sense of humour. During his rich life, he realized significant achievements. He earned his PHD at the University of Toronto and went on to teach in the Department of Zoology at the University of Western Ontario until his retirement in 1994. During his time at Western, he was a mentor and friend to both students and colleagues. He loved teaching and inspired many young students to make science their life’s work. His door was always open. Donald published many scientific papers in his field of Histology. He was the author of two textbooks: Fish Histology, Female Reproductive Systems (1999) and, most recently, An Atlas of Comparative Vertebrate Histology (2018) co-authored with his dear friend and colleague, Richard Harris. In addition to vertebrates, Don’s passions included Mozart, opera, cycling, the glories of the natural world, hand knitted sweaters (you can never have too many) and his cabin by the Fundy shore in Back Bay New Brunswick. Throughout his life he was a lover of crosswords, dessert, a good peaty scotch, and, yes, The Dukes of Hazzard. Most of all, he loved his family and his many life long friends. He was loyal, kind and true. Donald was born in Toronto to John and Bessie McMillan. He was predeceased by his brother Jack and his father-in-law, Frank Jensen. He is survived by his beloved wife and partner of 34 years, Lone Jensen, his mother-in-law, Krista Jensen, his sisters-in-law, Noreen, Donna, Bente and Pia, his brothers-in-law Carsten and Stephen, nieces Mary (Steve) and Liskula, nephews Alan, John (Mary Beth) and Phillip, great nephew Evan and great nieces, Heather, Bonnie and Liv. We will miss him so very much. Funeral service will take place at 11 am on Thursday January 17th, 2019 at The Church of Saint John the Evangelist, 280 St. James Street, London, Ontario, N6A 1X3. A Celebration of Life for Don will take place on April 25th, 2019 (Don’s 90th birthday). A further announcement with details of this event will be shared in due course. Don believed that the troubles of the world could be solved by three simple words: Love One Another. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to the St. John the Evangelist Endowment Fund for Music. “I can look into the world and see you in every act of love..” Molly Furnia
