Dr. W. Paul Bates

Obituary

Dr. W. Paul Bates

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. W. Paul Bates, a highly respected family doctor, on May 7, 2025. Paul was a Halloween baby.  He was born on October 31, 1944, in Toronto, to Miriam Aileen Bates and William Garfield Bates. He was an outstanding scholar and athlete, graduating from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1970. He loved practicing medicine and, after retiring, he continued contributing by working with airlines to ensure the capabilities of their pilots.

Throughout his career, Paul was passionate about family medicine and provided comforting care to his patients and their families. In 1988, he married Nancy Weber, and they enjoyed 36 years of happiness together.  He is survived by his children Patricia (Gib), Michael (Denise), Andrew, Matthew (Catharine), Mac Killoran (Heather), and Predeceased by his son David. Paul and Nancy were most proud of their grandchildren Mitchell, Melanie, Taylor (Taylor, Great-grandchildren Walker, Logan), Charlotte, Gabriella, Jake, Mason, Cole, and Emily.

In addition to his career, Paul and Nancy enjoyed travelling. They loved their annual trips to St. Lucia. They admired the history in China. Following the Rovos Rail train trip in Africa, they enjoyed Cape Town. Next, South America beckoned, and they visited the Galapagos, Buenos Aires, and Machu Picchu.

Special thanks to Dr D. Tingey, Dr. E. To, Dr. D. Malu, and Dr. J. Maclean for the compassionate care.

Private family arrangements. Interment in Toronto at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation (Ivey Eye, for the work of Dr. David Tingey) would be appreciated.

All in all, a life very well lived. As Paul commented, “it’s been a good run”.  Indeed, it has. Rest in peace, Batesy.
