Dr. Warren Nielson

Obituary

Dr. Warren Robert Nielson died peacefully at home on November 26th 2023 with family by his side.

Born March 17th 1953, Warren was the beloved and devoted son of the late Walter Russel Nielson and Rosalyn Janet Nielson, and much-loved big brother of Joanne (Glenn) Reimer and Carol (Michael) Noonan.

He was husband and best friend of Erica Gold, very proud father of Geoff (Amanda) and Ken, and adoring grandfather of Lily, who melted his heart.

Warren was the beloved son-in-law of Muriel Gold Poole (Ronald) and the late Maurice Gold, and will be deeply missed by his brother-in-law Glenn (Hedda) Gold and his nephews, nieces, close friends and relatives, who admired his quiet confidence, wisdom, support, empathy, humour and humility.

Warren spent most of his over 30-year career as a clinical health psychologist serving as Clinical Director of the Rheumatology Day Programs, first at University Hospital and later at St. Joseph’s Health Care, London. These innovative programs were some of the first multidisciplinary programs designed to help people suffering from chronic pain and/or illness. A former President of the Ontario Psychological Association, Warren was an effective and admired leader and a decorated scientist-practitioner who combined clinical excellence with prolific research output. He placed enormous importance on caring for those in need.

Warren’s fondest memories were of time spent with family, especially his childhood summers on the Nielson farm in Saskatchewan, and summer holidays at the cottage in Manitoba with his children, parents, sisters and their families. He took several cherished trips with his sons during the past 10 years centered around family history and great meals.

Warren loved sharing fine food and wine with family and friends. Somehow most gatherings at home were spent in the kitchen with guests drinking a glass of wine and watching his legendary cooking. For Warren, feeding people was the ultimate expression of love.

He was an avid guitar player and lover of music. He enjoyed sailing, held a personal interest in WWII history, as well as discussing his beloved but consummately disappointing Leafs and Jays with his best friend Rob.

Our family wishes to thank Drs. Potvin, Pautler, and Hertzman and nurses Jen, Vinish and Riya for their exceptional care. Please raise a glass of fine wine and enjoy an excellent meal in Warren’s memory.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James Street at Richmond, London on Thursday, December 7th from 2-4 p.m. Remembrances of Warren will begin at 3 p.m.
