CAPES, W. Howard – It is with sadness we announce the death of W. Howard Capes, an active and involved resident of London, at University Hospital on Thursday, March 22, 2018. His charming wife, Alma, passed away in 2002. Proud father of daughter Cathy and her husband, Ross, of Grimsby, son Donald and his wife, Marion Marshall, of Waterloo. Howard always looked forward to visits with his grandchildren Ryan and Jenna. Survived by his brother, John and his wife Margaret of Toronto, and sister Maxine and her husband Archie Hoven. He enjoyed activities that brought the family together: caring for sheep and chickens on the family hobby farm near Bayfield, riding the Palomino, sailing the Minuet on Fanshawe Lake, or camping across the continent. Howard and Alma enjoyed many happy times with the bridge and travel club (tennis, biking and skiing trips). In recent years he has looked forward to cottage, golf and jazz concerts with best friend Evelyn Milner. During World War II, he served in RCAF Aircrew. Howard was a graduate of McMaster University, and a post graduate of Wayne State University. After Graduation, he moved to Philadelphia for business training with CIGNA. Howard was transferred to their London Branch. Later, he chose to pursue a career in education with the London Board of Education, and UWO Althouse College. He was Past Chairman of the London-St. Thomas Advisory Board of the CNIB, Past President of the Forest City Kiwanis Club, and Past President of the Sunningdale Golf and Country Club. Howard was an active member of the First-St. Andrew’s United Church, serving on the Stewardship Committee, the Presbytery, and Tidings. A Celebration of his Life will be held at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James St. at Richmond, on Saturday, March 31 at 2 pm, with reception to follow. Visitation preceding the service from 1-2 pm. Cremation and private interment at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Special thanks to all of the caregivers at Palliative Care, University Hospital, and to Dr. Chin-Yee and other helping people at the London Cancer Clinic. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the London Regional Cancer Program would be appreciated.
