Hugh Newman

Obituary

NEWMAN, Hugh – Peacefully at his home on Friday, February 24, 2023, Hugh William Robert Newman of London in his 81st year.  Beloved husband for 54 years of Jane. Loving father of Christine and her husband Chris Coulson of Ottawa and Sarah and her husband Jeremy Marchant in Belgium.  Proud Grandpa of Ryan, Andrew and William Coulson and Julia and Eloïse Marchant.  Predeceased by his parents Neville and Phyllis (Nelson) Newman.

Exceptionally devoted to his family, Hugh was a positive and upbeat person whose humorous stories and natural kindness lifted the spirits of those around him. He was born in Sault Ste. Marie and was a true northern boy at heart.  He graduated from Queen’s University and attended teacher’s college in Toronto. Hugh taught at  A.B. Lucas Secondary School for 35 years, where he not only taught science, coached hockey, tennis and curling, but also met his wife Jane.  Hugh and Jane were avid curlers at the Ilderton Curling Club, they traveled extensively and enjoyed many summers with their family at their cottage in Haliburton.  Always active, he enjoyed tennis, running and in recent years walking in nearby Springbank Park. A huge movie buff, Hugh and his movie pals enjoyed the cinema on a regular basis.

Visitation on Thursday from 3-5 pm at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James St. at Richmond, where a memorial service will be conducted on Friday, March 3 at 11 am by Rev. Dr. Jeff Crittenden.  Memorial contributions to Boys’ and Girls’ Club of London Foundation would be appreciated.
