Joan Carrol Scott

Obituary

Joan Carrol Scott ( née Laughton) passed away peacefully, at University Hospital, on Saturday, March 4th, 2023, in her 80th year. Loving mother of her daughters, Cheryl Lyn Fletcher (Mark), Tammy Lea Scott (Dennis), devoted grandmother of Darian Noelle Fletcher, Ainsley Katelyn Fletcher, and Alex (Danica) Reader-Scott, named after one of Grandma’s favourite race car drivers, and step-grandmother to Sofia and Jaidyn Vasek. Predeceased by her mother, Florence Olive Laughton Shaw (née Jackson) and her father, Stuart Laughton.

Anyone who met Joan knew right away how much she loved her family, Elvis Presley, bingo and the slots, NASCAR and IndyCar racing, ducks, Diet Decaffeinated Pepsi, Disney, TV and scotch mints.  Even in hardship, Joan always tried to make Christmas and birthdays special for her daughters, and she continued doing so with her grandchildren. Those will always be special memories for all of us!

When she was younger, she loved to play music! She played the slide guitar, the piano, and the organ quite well. She played so well that at one time she even played the slide guitar on the radio! She attended Beal Secondary School, and later, she worked at Standard Life, GM and Widelite. During her adult years, she enjoyed playing tennis, golf, and slo-pitch. She always had ambitions to become a lab technician and travel to Hawaii, but sadly, she never lived out those dreams. She did, however, travel to the United States and DisneyWorld on several occasions, and she traveled to France and Italy. She absolutely loved EuroDisney and Venice, or Venezia, as we discovered it is really called! Joan especially enjoyed traveling for a visit with her cousins and their families, in the USA.

Thanks to the Nursing staff, Support workers and Spiritual care staff at Mount Hope MV 4th floor, and at UH, for the care they provided Joan since her stroke, in November of 2019.

A memorial service will be conducted at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James St. at Richmond on Saturday, March 11 at 2 pm, with visitation preceding from 1-2 pm.  In Memoriam donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke foundation:  https://www.heartandstroke.ca/how-you-can-help/ways-to-give
