Larry Kinlin

Obituary

KINLIN, Lawrence Walter – Larry Kinlin was a very unique individual who had a way of getting things done. Whether he was addressing the needs of his clients, raising money for local charities or dissecting the best way to strike a golf ball, Larry was always moving forward. Yesterday was not soon enough. Larry died at home on Monday, June 12, 2017 with his loving and compassionate wife, Janis by his side. Larry was an extremely kind, loving and devoted husband to Janis and a caring father to his children Deborah, Michele, Bill (Nerina), Tracey (Bob), Carrie, Daryl, step children Carolynn (Paul), Charles (SoRa), Elizabeth (Ben) and 16 grandchildren.

Larry was raised in Peterborough, the son of the late William and Margaret (Healey) Kinlin and is survived by his sister MaryEstelle (Gary) Hare and predeceased by his brother Patrick Kinlin. Larry was an entrepreneur and a philanthropist who led by example with an indomitable spirit, steely determination and a kindness and generosity that was respected and admired in the business community and among close friends and acquaintances. He was an avid news collector and used this information to make connections wherever he travelled.

Larry’s passion was selling life insurance. His career began in August 1965 and he became a leader in the industry receiving many distinguished awards for his success. He worked for The Mutual Life Assurance Co. of Canada for 35 years and then founded Kinlin and Associates in 2000, working for 51 years of dedicated service to his clients. Larry was not only an accomplished life insurance agent but also a generous, far-sighted and effective volunteer whose wise council and advice supported many agencies.

Larry worked tirelessly with community leaders to raise funds for London Health Sciences, YMCA, United Way, Catholic charities and Fanshawe College. Larry earned an Honorary Degree in 2012 and an Alumni Award of Distinction in 2017 from Fanshawe College. Larry was involved in the first capital campaign at Fanshawe College and served for five years on the Foundation Board becoming Chairman of the 100 million dollar capital campaign. Larry made a special commitment to Fanshawe College in 2008 culminating in the naming of the Lawrence Kinlin School of Business which continues to be a leader among Colleges across Canada.

Some of Larry’s fondest memories are golfing at the Georgian Bay Golf Club and The London Hunt and Country Club. He enjoyed spending time at their summer home in Thornbury where he could navigate the beautiful terrain in his latest automobile and relax in front of a roaring fire with family and friends.

Visitation on Wednesday, June 14 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James St. at Richmond, London. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Basilica, 196 Dufferin Ave. at Richmond, London, Ontario on Thursday, June 15 at 1 pm. Interment St. Peter’s Cemetery. Reception to follow at London Hunt and Country Club from 2:30 – 4:30 pm. Deepest thanks to Dr. Mura, Dr. Cejic, the caring VON staff in London and Grey Bruce and Medical Priorities. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
