Mary Ellen Thornhill

Obituary

Thornhill, Mary Ellen (Murray) – It is with profound sadness that the family of Mary Ellen Thornhill announces her passing on November 9, 2022 after a brave fight with cancer.

She was the beloved wife of Michael Van Vugt, the cherished mother of Shaun and Danielle Thornhill and adored Grandma and Meme to Rae Loebach and McKenna Baker.  She is also survived by her twin sister Mary Catherine McIntyre, brother Dan Murray (Colleen), sister Janet Marks (late Billy), sister Maureen Wraight (Sean) and sister Rose Cicovacki (Bo).  Predeceased by brother Chris Murray (2017), niece and nephew Karli Marks (2020) and Jason Marks (2015).  Also survived by many nieces and nephews.  She will be deeply missed and forever loved.  She was known for her energy, kindness and sweet nature.

She was born on August 17, 1953 in St. Thomas to Jack and Rita Murray.  Mary Ellen spent the majority of her years in London as well as 5 years in Edmonton and 10 years in Nova Scotia.  Mary Ellen loved unconditionally and gave selflessly to her family and friends.  She was always a gracious hostess when her and Mike had get-togethers.

We are forever thankful for her abundant life and many happy memories we share.  Cremation has taken place.  A memorial service will be conducted at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James Street at Richmond on Tuesday, November 15 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation preceding from 10-11 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
