Licsik, Matthew – Peacefully at Victoria Hospital on Saturday, June 19, 2021, Matthew Licsik of London.
Matthew is survived by his wife, Kathleen “Kay” nee James, his daughter and son-in-law, Alison and Michael Hannay, his two grandchildren, James and Aurora Hannay. Also remembered by Chris Hannay and his family.
Matthew was born in 1928, in the small village of Pilisszántó, just outside of Budapest. Surviving both of the invasions by the German and Soviet Armies during the Second World War, he left Hungary for Canada in 1956. Matthew made a new life and met Kay, his cherished wife of fifty-eight years. After his marriage, he was welcomed into his much larger Canadian family, and created a new one of his own. Within ten years of his arrival in Canada, Matthew had mastered the English language and was teaching elementary school in Ottawa and London Ontario. Matthew had a love for food, especially good desserts, enjoyed his weekly Sunday drive out into the countryside surrounding London, and was always deeply concerned about current news events. Matthew loved going out on nature walks in parks and took great care of his extensive vegetable and herb gardens. It was clear, however, that his family was the most important thing in his life and Sunday dinners were always filled with great stories and many laughs.
He will be held in our hearts and remembered for his love of family, his ability to always encourage and support, his love of reading, his magic cooking and his impish smile.
Special thanks to the Critical Care Trauma Centre staff at Victoria Hospital for their kindness and compassion.
