Miles died peacefully September 27, 2026 at Highview Residences, London. Born April 8, 1929, in Ottawa, he studied zoology at UBC, and married his great love, Hilda Alev in 1951. He did his PHD in ethology in Groningen, Netherlands, specializing in fish behaviour. He worked in St Andrews NB, until being hired at UWO, where he taught zoology for 33 years. His work passion was his students, many of whom remember him fondly as a role model and mentor. He published many articles, and a book on fish behaviour. He lived and worked in Brisbane, Vancouver, Costa Rica and South Africa.
His love of travelling took Hilda and him around the world, camping with the family, and with Elderhostel in retirement. He loved reading, nature, running, tennis, and scuba diving. He was a loyal friend, and a welcoming host. His devotion to Hilda was the passion of his life. They travelled, entertained and loved theatre and music. Most of all they showed what a loving supportive family is, giving the example of kindness, generosity, diligence and good humour to follow. He was a lovely, courteous, caring and funny man.
He is survived by his sister Lynn Cosway, and his sons Joel, wife Paula Donahue, children Alida and Gabe, and Eric, wife Peg Christopherson, children Levi and Nick, who miss his warmth and support.
A memorial service will be held at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James Street at Richmond, on Saturday, December 19 at 2 pm, with a reception to follow.
