Obituary

Ruth Patricia (Gowing) Worsley

13-Nov-1927 – 07-Mar-2023

Peacefully, in the Palliative Care Unit at Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario, our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother left us to join her beloved husband John Worsley.

Ruth is survived by step-daughter Joan Goring; daughters Susan McGregor (Doug) and Judy Worsley; grandchildren Morgan Goring (Andrea), Victoria Goring, Ann Reilly (Nick) and Duncan McGregor (Sara); and by great-grandchildren Carson Goring, and Isaac and Kate Reilly. Ruth was predeceased by brother Donald Gowing and sister Elvia Lummis. She is survived by sister Kay Warry and brother Clifton Gowing (Monique).

Ruth was born in Toronto, grew up in Montreal and exaggerated her age to join the Canadian Armed Forces in 1944. After a year she left with an honourable discharge when needed to assist her father and ailing mother. Ruth met John at a class for veterans at l’Université de Montréal and they married in 1946. They bought their home in Montreal in 1947. John died in 1965 and Ruth continued to live there until 2015 when she moved to London to be closer to family.

Mum was a very strong-willed, independent lady with many interests. She worked as a civilian employee for the Department of National Defense at the Longue Pointe Supply Depot in Montreal for 35 years. Ruth was a life-time member of Sweet Adelines International and a Charter Member of The Greater Montreal Chorus of Sweet Adelines International where her rich bass voice was so well appreciated. She made many life-long, treasured friends through the Sweet Adelines.

Mum enjoyed golfing and continued to follow it on TV regularly after she stopped playing. Ruth loved fishing with her big brother Don, and she was always up for a game of cribbage. In 2004 she got her first computer and used it well to keep in touch with family and friends.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date in Montreal. If you wish, in remembrance of Ruth, please make a donation to your favourite charity in lieu of flowers.
