OSBORN, Sylvia Louise – passed away on May 23, 2018 at her home in London, Ontario at the age of 69, after three years of treatment for cancer.
Sylvia was born and raised in Timmins, Ontario before attending the University of Waterloo, where she completed bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in Computer Science. Sylvia then took a position as a professor at the University of Western Ontario, where she worked for 40 years until her retirement.
Sylvia was a loving and devoted wife and mother, who was also able to forge an accomplished career as a teacher, mentor, and internationally-recognized researcher in the field of computer databases – one of few women working in computing during this era.
Sylvia loved working in her garden and was a skilled and prolific knitter. She also loved spending time at her cottage in Muskoka, visiting with her family and friends, and travelling for pleasure and to academic conferences around the world.
She will be fondly remembered by her husband of 40 years, Bruce Locke; children, Rod (Quinn) and Beth; grandchildren, Simone and Vaughn; siblings, Ann (Peter), Rick (Sandy), and Linda; and extended family and dear friends.
Visitations will be held from 2-4pm Friday June 1 and 1-2pm Saturday June 2 before a Celebration of Life at 2pm, all at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St James St. at Richmond, London ON.
