ROBERTS, William (Bill) Archibald
Born March 22, 1932, Mount Forest – Died May 21, 2021, London
With family by his side, we’re sad to announce the peaceful passing of William (Bill) Roberts following a lengthy illness. Loving husband and best friend of Barbara (nee Powers). Proud father of Beth, Brenda (Dean) and Brad, all of London, and grandfather to his favourite euchre partner Houston. He is survived by sister-in-law Freda Roberts, and nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Reuben and Marion, his in-laws Dr. Oscar and Vera Powers, his brothers Jack and Jim, his sister Ellen, and his sisters-in-law Lois Powers and Lois Roberts.
Bill joined The Royal Bank in Durham, Ontario at the age of 17. His outgoing nature, sense of humour, and strong work ethic helped him develop many friends as well as clients throughout his 39-year career. A career with the Bank meant many moves: Durham (twice), Stoney Creek,
Thamesford (where he met and married his baseball coach’s daughter), Port Dover, Windsor (3 times), St. Catharines, Guelph, Woodstock, Stayner, Orangeville and London. Over the years Bill went from teller to manager until retiring out of the London area office.
Bill was a talented athlete with a love for all sports. If he wasn’t playing baseball, or hockey with the Durham Huskies and Port Dover Sailors, you might find him at the curling club or golf course. He coached youth hockey and was a loyal fan of the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings.
Bill had an affinity for music. He loved singing and played trumpet in bands in Durham and Orangeville where Big Band music was the theme.
Bill was an active supporter of the communities he lived in through organizations like Lions, Kinsmen and Rotary, as well as being active in his church. In addition to all of this he found time and loved working the farm and tending the cattle with his father-in-law Dr. Powers. A meticulous, skilled handyman no job was beyond him – electrical, plumbing, woodwork, and renovations at all their homes (including Florida), as well as for Brenda and Beth. Once retired, Bill and Barb spent many winters in Lakeland, Florida, and enjoyed taking tours
throughout the United States, United Kingdom and Europe, as well as Caribbean and Alaskan cruises.
The family wishes to thank Ann Schuur, his PSW Diane, and his caregivers at University Hospital. Due to current restrictions a private family Graveside Service will be held at Norwich Cemetery. For those who wish, donations may be made to Kidsport Canada (kidsportcanada.ca) or Jesse’s Journey (jessesjourney.com).
